Atlantic Beach lies on the eastern end of Bogue Banks, one of the North Carolina Barrier islands. Bogue sound separates the island from the mainland.

The thriving Atlantic Beach, NC real estate market varies from oceanfront sand castles to condos to bungalows and cottages— and in between. Homes may be oceanfront, oceanview and soundfront. Homes not on the water are called "interior" homes around here. Many homeowners turn their homes into investments and rent them as vacation rentals.

Atlantic Beach wasn't developed until the 1880s when a pavilion was built on the eastern end of the island. Guests at Morehead City's Atlantic Hotel were able to reach the resort area via ferry.

The Atlantic Beach area is well known as a world class scuba diving destination. The Cape Lookout National Seashore and Fort Macon National Park are both within 10 miles of Atlantic Beach.
