Beaufort is a vibrant, charming town with real estate ranging from historical 18th century homes to new development. There are currently several areas of home construction underway in and around Beaufort. There is a wide range of choices.

Beaufort lies on the North Carolina mainland and facing an inlet between the southern outer banks. The Intra Coastal Waterway passes in front of the downtown’s modern marina and revitalized shops and restaurants. The Cape Lookout lighthouse and National Seashore lie about 13 miles to the southeast— and only six nautical miles from Beaufort Inlet. (Get used to the maritime flavor of Beaufort: a nautical mile is 1.15 statute miles!)

An active historical preservation committee guards the heritage of the town and its 18th and 19th century architecture. Beaufort is a charming mix of the old and the new. North Carolinians pronounce the name “BO-furt.” The third oldest town in North Carolina, it was originally named “Fish Towne” because of the earliest industry. Most of the pre-modern homes and buildings in Beaufort are built of wood and are painted white. You may notice the decided Caribbean influence of the historic homes and architecture in Beaufort. Much of the coastal Carolina trade during colonial times was with the Bahamas, and the construction styles in those islands influenced Beaufort homes.
