The Results Are In!
Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament 2016
Whether you attended the events, followed the tournament, or merely have an interest in Morehead City events and celebrations, it’s time to read up on the results! The 58th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament saw a record purse of $1,914,100 and the largest competitive field in history, with a total of 174 boats in the big Rock and 125 boats in the Keli Wagner Lady Angler (KWLA) tournament. And with two shocking double victories, there were actually fewer overall winners than in years past!
#1 Overall Tournament Winner: A Stunning Double Victory!
The overall winner of KWLA and the 58th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament—actually the same boat. The Ashley Lauren fishing team captured both victories in a span of eight days and made tournament history after Jackie Miller and Kim Annis landed the winning catches of the KWLA tournament and angler Doug Phillips captured a 621.4 blue marlin in the final tournament. Captain for all three catches was Mark Annis. The team took home $662,995 for the Big Rock prize and an additional $13,281 for the KWLA.
Second place went out to the Marlin Gull and its captain Kenny Midgett after William McSpadden landed a 564.8 blue marlin. They also took home the Fabulous Fisherman price of $433,500 for landing the first 500-pound blue marlin of the tournament, in addition to $238,480 in second-place prize earnings.
The Viking 72 took home the third place prize with a 564.1 pound blue marlin landed by Drew McDowell of Jupiter, Florida. Interestingly, Viking 72 crew were team members of the Viking 62 that won the 57th Big Rock of 2015.
Another Double Victory
The Ashley Lauren wasn’t the only team to taste a double victory. Casey Wagner won the Winner Take All dolphin prizes of the KWLA and the Big Rock, first with a 31.2 lb reeled by Jeannie Fischler and then a 49.3 pounder caught by Trent Ragland. The first prize was worth $49,725 and the second $130,050.
